The National Transportation Safety Board factual aviation accident reports do not antedate 1978. However “Briefs” to accidents go back as far as 1964. Officially, the Civil Aeronautic Board reports (the Bureau which preceded the NTSB) have all been destroyed. In actuality, they are held at General Microfilm (at least those reports that date back through the 1960s). Unfortunately, they are not indexed. Therefore, essentially, for now they are indeed lost, lost in a warehouse full of boxes.
The following profiles are based on the available “Briefs.” They are terse and contain little information. (I am still seeking accident reports from the 1940s through to 1978 for civil aircraft). Nevertheless, they officially confirm the number and types of disappearances. The conclusion expressed in them gives us the only clue as to what the contemporary investigations uncovered: “Aircraft Damage and Injury Index Presumed.”
Most have never before published in any form until now.

Note: the photographs below are of the same model of aircraft that vanished and, unless otherwise noted, are not a picture of the actual plane that went missing.
